Geof, intriguing article. The ethically questionable, and borderline illegal actions of the Fed have become a subject of hot debate both within and outside of the financial industry (was chairman of an investment management firm for 4 years).
One of the promising deterrents to this institutionalized, centralized control of currency has been supporting alternatives to it, such as the Bitcoin (www.bitcoin.org). This month, the Bitcoin has had extensive media coverage. May be worth checking out if economics and finance is another one of your interests.
