New For The Crew

NEW FOR THE CREW

As of September 2013 the following has occurred:

1. LUCAS KERR has booked a Guest Star role on CSI as Serial Killer, Mathew Tarland. It will air on September 25th, the Season Opener.

2. MAX ADLER has just finished shooting the film, “Believe Me,” playing a lead role, Baker Johnson. It was the first time MAX had been cast in a strong comedic role. He has also just booked a Guest Star on CSI, where he will be playing the part of Peter, a less than appealing Pawn Shop Dealer. And shortly after he finishes the CSI, he will begin shooting the film, “Saugatuck Cures.” where he will be one of two lead best friends taking off to explore life beyond their small town.

3. JENNIFER BRONSTEIN has been cast in the play, “Sherlock Through The Looking –Glass.” The play will be running for three more weekends and is playing to sold out audiences. 4. WILL DAMRON has just book another AudioBook. This will be his sixth book.

As many of you know, I am an avid supporter of maintaining the human connection. As technology races onward, I find the individual using it slowly disappearing into fractured statements, word particles, and emoticons. I am not suggesting we rid ourselves of technology, I am asking us to evaluate what we are potentially sacrificing, sometimes unknowingly, by blindly handing ourselves over to it. Does Facebook Depress You?

Facebook-depression-actor-resource.jpgWith all the happy, shining photos posted on Facebook, is it possible that some of its members are actually not quite so carefree and cool after all? Apparently so; the American Academy of Pediatrics recently warned that exposure to Facebook has the potential to lead to depression. According to the lead author of new American Academy of Pediatrics social media guidelines, Dr. Gwenn O’Keeffe, these radiant photos showing people having good times, accompanied by in-your-face popularity tallies, as well as status updates can do a number on those who suffer with low self-esteem. When a child or teen feels his or her life doesn’t measure up to what’s perceived on others’ Facebook pages, it is described as being more painful than sitting alone in a crowded school cafeteria. After all, the site conceals vulnerable facial expressions or self-conscious body language of anyone in the midst of posting. Certainly, if the viewer could see an individual suffering from a broken heart as he uploads a radical pic of his latest gnarly skateboard maneuver, the viewer might have a more realistic sense of the actual digital social landscape.

Researchers disagree on whether “Facebook depression” is simply an extension of depression some kids and teens feel in other circumstances, or a distinct condition linked with using Facebook. But as the site is “where all the teens are hanging out now,” according to O’Keeffe, the guidelines ultimately encourage parents to make their children aware of Facebook depression as well as cyberbullying, sexting, and other online risks.

O’Keeffe also acknowledges the benefits of kids using social media sites like Facebook for their ability to connect with friends and family, and sharing photos, and exchanging ideas. “A lot of what’s happening is actually very healthy, but it can go too far,” she said.

Dr. Megan Moreno, a University of Wisconsin adolescent medication specialist who has studied online social networking among college students, insists that well-adjusted kids using Facebook can, in fact, increase feelings of social connectedness–creating the opposite effect of what is seen in those prone to depression. Parents shouldn’t get the idea that using Facebook “is going to somehow infect their kids with depression,” Moreno asserts.

So what is there to take from this recent research that applies to you, aspiring actors? First of all, Facebook has the potential to be a useful tool in the actor’s arsenal when it comes to networking. You can put yourself out there, show what your interests are and what you’re up to, and there’s the potential to meet individuals otherwise out of reach. Increasing the size of your social circle can be a game changer in the competitive world of acting. But if this resource starts arousing feelings of inadequacy or an unhealthy desire to keep up with the cyber Jones’; or, if you find yourself feeling frustrated that your “likes” have hit a ceiling as opposed to others on the site, maybe it’s best to take a break and consider other networking options. Sites like Facebook are not for everyone, and people have managed to achieve high degrees of success in career and relationships way back in the dark ages when people used to more readily meet for coffee or drinks–B4 the inception of Facebook.

I am posting a specific roundtable talk with a group of actresses because I found their discussion about actors knowing their words/lines refreshing and relevant. There are many other interesting discussions to check out as well. There are people we have to work with; and then, there are the people we want to work with.

JULIA WHELAN has been nominated for an AUDIE AWARD for her audiobook narration of, “THE WITNESS.” She was also selected as “BEST YOUNG ADULT VOICE OF 2012.”

I found this latest piece of research important to all of us, young and older. It’s refreshing to find individuals in all walks of life who are willing to re-evaluate, maintain perspective, and change their thinking accordingly.

We physicians with all our training, knowledge and authority often acquire a rather large ego that tends to make it difficult to admit we are wrong. So, here it is. I freely admit to being wrong. As a heart surgeon with 25 years experience, having performed over 5,000 open-heart surgeries, today is my day to right the wrong with medical and scientific fact.

I trained for many years with other prominent physicians labelled “opinion makers.” Bombarded with scientific literature, continually attending education seminars, we opinion makers insisted heart disease resulted from the simple fact of elevated blood cholesterol.

The only accepted therapy was prescribing medications to lower cholesterol and a diet that severely restricted fat intake. The latter of course we insisted would lower cholesterol and heart disease. Deviations from these recommendations were considered heresy and could quite possibly result in malpractice.

It Is Not Working!

These recommendations are no longer scientifically or morally defensible. The discovery a few years ago that inflammation in the artery wall is the real cause of heart disease is slowly leading to a paradigm shift in how heart disease and other chronic ailments will be treated.

The long-established dietary recommendations have created epidemics of obesity and diabetes, the consequences of which dwarf any historical plague in terms of mortality, human suffering and dire economic consequences.

Despite the fact that 25% of the population takes expensive statin medications and despite the fact we have reduced the fat content of our diets, more Americans will die this year of heart disease than ever before.

Statistics from the American Heart Association show that 75 million Americans currently suffer from heart disease, 20 million have diabetes and 57 million have pre-diabetes. These disorders are affecting younger and younger people in greater numbers every year.

Simply stated, without inflammation being present in the body, there is no way that cholesterol would accumulate in the wall of the blood vessel and cause heart disease and strokes. Without inflammation, cholesterol would move freely throughout the body as nature intended. It is inflammation that causes cholesterol to become trapped.

Inflammation is not complicated — it is quite simply your body’s natural defence to a foreign invader such as a bacteria, toxin or virus. The cycle of inflammation is perfect in how it protects your body from these bacterial and viral invaders. However, if we chronically expose the body to injury by toxins or foods the human body was never designed to process,a condition occurs called chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation is just as harmful as acute inflammation is beneficial.

What thoughtful person would willfully expose himself repeatedly to foods or other substances that are known to cause injury to the body? Well, smokers perhaps, but at least they made that choice willfully.

The rest of us have simply followed the recommended mainstream diet that is low in fat and high in polyunsaturated fats and carbohydrates, not knowing we were causing repeated injury to our blood vessels. This repeated injury creates chronic inflammation leading to heart disease, stroke, diabetes and obesity.

Let me repeat that: The injury and inflammation in our blood vessels is caused by the low fat diet recommended for years by mainstream medicine.

What are the biggest culprits of chronic inflammation? Quite simply, they are the overload of simple, highly processed carbohydrates (sugar, flour and all the products made from them) and the excess consumption of omega-6 vegetable oils like soybean, corn and sunflower that are found in many processed foods.

Take a moment to visualize rubbing a stiff brush repeatedly over soft skin until it becomes quite red and nearly bleeding. you kept this up several times a day, every day for five years. If you could tolerate this painful brushing, you would have a bleeding, swollen infected area that became worse with each repeated injury. This is a good way to visualize the inflammatory process that could be going on in your body right now.

Regardless of where the inflammatory process occurs, externally or internally, it is the same. I have peered inside thousands upon thousands of arteries. A diseased artery looks as if someone took a brush and scrubbed repeatedly against its wall. Several times a day, every day, the foods we eat create small injuries compounding into more injuries, causing the body to respond continuously and appropriately with inflammation.

While we savor the tantalizing taste of a sweet roll, our bodies respond alarmingly as if a foreign invader arrived declaring war. Foods loaded with sugars and simple carbohydrates, or processed with omega-6 oils for long shelf life have been the mainstay of the American diet for six decades. These foods have been slowly poisoning everyone.

How does eating a simple sweet roll create a cascade of inflammation to make you sick?

Imagine spilling syrup on your keyboard and you have a visual of what occurs inside the cell. When we consume simple carbohydrates such as sugar, blood sugar rises rapidly. In response, your pancreas secretes insulin whose primary purpose is to drive sugar into each cell where it is stored for energy. If the cell is full and does not need glucose, it is rejected to avoid extra sugar gumming up the works.

When your full cells reject the extra glucose, blood sugar rises producing more insulin and the glucose converts to stored fat.

What does all this have to do with inflammation? Blood sugar is controlled in a very narrow range. Extra sugar molecules attach to a variety of proteins that in turn injure the blood vessel wall. This repeated injury to the blood vessel wall sets off inflammation. When you spike your blood sugar level several times a day, every day, it is exactly like taking sandpaper to the inside of your delicate blood vessels.

While you may not be able to see it, rest assured it is there. I saw it in over 5,000 surgical patients spanning 25 years who all shared one common denominator — inflammation in their arteries.

Let’s get back to the sweet roll. That innocent looking goody not only contains sugars, it is baked in one of many omega-6 oils such as soybean. Chips and fries are soaked in soybean oil; processed foods are manufactured with omega-6 oils for longer shelf life. While omega-6’s are essential -they are part of every cell membrane controlling what goes in and out of the cell — they must be in the correct balance with omega-3’s.

If the balance shifts by consuming excessive omega-6, the cell membrane produces chemicals called cytokines that directly cause inflammation.

Today’s mainstream American diet has produced an extreme imbalance of these two fats. The ratio of imbalance ranges from 15:1 to as high as 30:1 in favor of omega-6. That’s a tremendous amount of cytokines causing inflammation. In today’s food environment, a 3:1 ratio would be optimal and healthy.

To make matters worse, the excess weight you are carrying from eating these foods creates overloaded fat cells that pour out large quantities of pro-inflammatory chemicals that add to the injury caused by having high blood sugar. The process that began with a sweet roll turns into a vicious cycle over time that creates heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and finally, Alzheimer’s disease, as the inflammatory process continues unabated.

There is no escaping the fact that the more we consume prepared and processed foods, the more we trip the inflammation switch little by little each day. The human body cannot process, nor was it designed to consume, foods packed with sugars and soaked in omega-6 oils.

There is but one answer to quieting inflammation, and that is returning to foods closer to their natural state. To build muscle, eat more protein. Choose carbohydrates that are very complex such as colorful fruits and vegetables. Cut down on or eliminate inflammation- causing omega-6 fats like corn and soybean oil and the processed foods that are made from them.

One tablespoon of corn oil contains 7,280 mg of omega-6; soybean contains 6,940 mg. Instead, use olive oil or butter from grass-fed beef.

Animal fats contain less than 20% omega-6 and are much less likely to cause inflammation than the supposedly healthy oils labelled polyunsaturated. Forget the “science” that has been drummed into your head for decades. The science that saturated fat alone causes heart disease is non-existent. The science that saturated fat raises blood cholesterol is also very weak. Since we now know that cholesterol is not the cause of heart disease, the concern about saturated fat is even more absurd today.

The cholesterol theory led to the no-fat, low-fat recommendations that in turn created the very foods now causing an epidemic of inflammation. Mainstream medicine made a terrible mistake when it advised people to avoid saturated fat in favor of foods high in omega-6 fats. We now have an epidemic of arterial inflammation leading to heart disease and other silent killers.

What you can do is choose whole foods your grandmother served and not those your mom turned to as grocery store aisles filled with manufactured foods. By eliminating inflammatory foods and adding essential nutrients from fresh unprocessed food, you will reverse years of damage in your arteries and throughout your body from consuming the typical American diet.

I found this interesting enough to post. Sometimes we can confuse the brain as us, rather than an organ that is affected by us and therefore, have a direct effect upon our functioning. I would like to add that the relevance of curiosity and discovery can have a continued value to maintaining brain health. You may also notice some familiar themes that we work on in our own way. There are many books on the market that focus on treating the brain like any other organ of the body. To improve the brain, they advise eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep and avoiding toxins like alcohol and nicotine.

These are sound bits of advice, but in my own book, “Super Brain,” written with professor Rudolph Tanzi of Harvard Medical School, the emphasis is on the brain’s uniqueness. The secret to improving your brain is to understand that uniqueness.

The brain is the only organ that changes instantly according to how the mind relates to it. You can relate to your brain in positive or negative ways, and depending on which one you choose, your brain cells, neural pathways and areas of high and low activity will be altered.

In short, thinking your brain into better functioning is the most efficient way to improve it. (Other organs of the body also respond to positive and negative thinking, but their response must come through the brain first; it functions as command central for the rest of the body.

The best way to relate to your brain is to inspire it; the worst way is to ignore it. Since the brain embraces every thought, word and deed, the list of things under each heading is long but very much worth attending to. See which of the following applies to you.

Take care of stress. Avoid dulling routine. Do something creative every day. Read poetry, spiritual material or anything else that makes you feel uplifted. Take time to be in nature. Bond with another person who is heartwarming. Pay attention to being happy. Make sure you take time every day by yourself to relax, meditate and self-reflect. Deal with negative emotions like anger and anxiety. Focus on activity that makes you feel fulfilled. Give of yourself. Follow a personal vision. Attach yourself to a cause that is bigger than you are. Take the risk to love and be loved.

How to ignore your brain

Get set in your ways. Don’t look beyond your opinions, likes and dislikes. Isolate yourself from others. Take relationships for granted. Reconcile yourself to going downhill as you age. Look upon the past as the best time of your life. Forget about having ideals. Act on selfish impulses. Don’t examine what makes you tick. Give in to anger and anxiety. Let life take care of itself. Go along to get along. Assume that you are automatically right. Avoid anything new or challenging. Put up with stress. Take no emotional risks. Distract yourself with mindless diversions like watching sports for hours on end.

The difference between these two lists is pretty stark. In one case, you are approaching the brain as if it had great untapped potential. In the other, you assume that the brain runs on automatic pilot.

It is undeniable that the brain is endlessly adaptable. It turns into whatever you expect it to be. So how you relate to your brain is never passive; you are always instructing it to function in a certain way. Thus the whole package of beliefs, expectations, likes and dislikes that you hold inside are creating change — or blocking it — at the level of brain circuitry.

Needless to say, it’s better to inspire your brain than to ignore it. Potential is a terrible thing to waste.

The first step in forming a better relationship with your brain is to realize that you have a relationship. Once you realize this, you can choose to pay attention to the relationship and nurture it. You are in on a secret that escapes countless people. Take advantage of it.
